Chain Reaction series

2010 - 2011

These A3 sized quilts were made as part of the Stitch Witches Chain Reaction challenge.

Based on the word game Chinese Whispers this challenge produced twenty-five diverse and interesting quilts.

Our aim was to produce a set of quilts in a challenge that would enable each group member to work independently on their own pieces, breaking away from our usual collaborative challenges working on each others’ quilts.

Each group member started a series by making a quilt of their own design and theme. This was passed this onto the next member who then interpreted the subject of the quilt in their own way and produced a response. This second quilt was passed to the next group member who did not see the original, and the series continued.

At each stage the maker saw only the previous quilt, with no supporting notes or sketches, never the whole series. When the completed chains were finally revealed at the end of the challenge it was intriguing to see how far we had travelled from the original idea in just five steps!
