Shingle Garden

2014

I dream of living by the sea. My garden would be a shingle garden: in it would be driftwood, rust, flotsam and jetsam, and plants so hardy even I couldn’t kill them!

Made for the Guilds' Challenge at the Festival of Quilts 2014, where the theme was In my Garden.

Materials: Hand dyed and printed cotton sateen and poplin. Wax resist. Rust dyeing. Hand dyed and commercial threads.

Method:  Raw edge appliqué. Fabric coloured by scraping with thickened procion dye, and dyeing with rusted car parts found on Lyme Regis beach. Hand and machine quilted.

Size: 160cm x 50cm
